Definition
Know Your Customer (KYC) refers to the set of procedures by which a financial institution or a regulated service provider verifies a client's identity, the nature of their activity, and the origin of the funds they wish to invest or channel through the institution. This approach is part of anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing frameworks, and is a precondition for entering into a business relationship.
Framework in Mauritius
In Mauritius, KYC obligations apply in particular to management companies licensed by the Financial Services Commission (FSC), the regulator of non-bank financial services. These corporate service providers, responsible for administering Global Business Companies (GBC) and Authorised Companies, must verify the identity of shareholders, directors, and beneficial owners before any incorporation or take-on of a structure, and then throughout the relationship. Compliance with these obligations is a condition for the management company to retain its licence with the FSC.
In practice
In concrete terms, KYC involves the collection of identity documents, proof of address, an organisational chart of beneficial owners, and information on the source of funds and the intended activity. These checks are renewed periodically and reinforced where the client's profile, business sector, or country of residence presents a higher level of risk. The main point of caution for the client is responsiveness: the more completely the requested documents are provided, the more smoothly the setting up or ongoing administration of the structure proceeds. Conversely, an incomplete file or poorly identified beneficial owners may delay the entry into the relationship, without any timeframe being guaranteed in advance.

KYC is inseparable from AML (Anti-Money Laundering), the broader anti-money-laundering framework within which it sits, as well as from the role of the Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO), responsible for anti-money-laundering compliance within the institution. It also complements the reporting obligations arising from FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), which concern the automatic exchange of tax information rather than identity verification itself. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the management company remain, in Mauritius, the two central actors in this framework.
